Rafa Benítez has been sacked as Everton manager after just over six months in the job.

The announcement from the Merseyside club came less than 24 hours after their 2-1 Premier League loss to Norwich on Saturday.

The result left the Toffees with just one win in their last 13 league games.

They're 16th in the Premier League table and just six points from the relegation zone.

Despite the humiliation by Norwich, Benítez spoke with positivity at full-time at Carrow Road.

“We are disappointed like the fans. We have to improve things on the pitch and with players coming back we have to make the right decisions.

“I am a professional and I have enough experience.

“I came here to fix issues that were coming from the last five years.

“What I have to do now is analyse the mistakes we are making and make sure we avoid them for the future. The rest is not in my hands.”

The 61-year-old Spaniard won't get a chance to fix those mistakes though.

A brief statement from the club on the decision to fire him on Sunday said:

"Everton Football Club can confirm the departure of Rafael Benitez as First Team manager.

"Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, has left the Club with immediate effect.

"An update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course."
