Arsenal will go into the new year on top of the Premier league table. They overcame Newcastle 1-0 at St. James Park, thanks to a second half Olivier Giroud header.

But the Gunners can't rest on their laurels, as Manchester City are just a single point behind after beating Crystal Palace 1-0 at the Etihad.

Chelsea arguably picked up the biggest win of the weekend as they beat title rivals Liverpool 2-1 at home. First half goals from Eden Hazard and Samuel Eto'o keep the Blues in third place, and are now just two points off top spot.

Amazingly, Liverpool spent Christmas day in first place, and now sit in 5th place at the turn of the year.

Everton jumped the Reds into the final Champions League spot after picking up a 2-1 win over Southampton at Goodison Park. Irishman Seamus Coleman opened the scoring with a cracking effort into the top corner. That's his fifth of the season.

Manchester United kept up their good recent form with a hard fought 1-0 away win over Norwich.

The Red Devils are now eight points off Arsenal, and with a few key signings in the January transfer window, vould yet feature in the title run in.
