Last time Liverpool played Real Madrid in a European Cup final in 1981, Phil Thompson was captain and the man who lifted the trophy at full time.

Both sides go head to head again in the 2018 Champions League final in Kiev this Saturday and ahead of that occasion, Thompson joined Kevin Kilbane and Joe on the Football Show to look back at his memories of '81 and to share his thoughts on the upcoming finale.

Thommo is in confident mood ahead of Saturday night.

"I really feel as though, if you look at the games where we've played ever so well this season which is three games against Manchester City. Manchester City can only play one way and that's very offensive, go for it and players who just want to attack and can't park the bus," he said.

"That's Real Madrid. That's how they play. That's how Barcelona play, that's how Man City play.

"And I think that plays into the way we want to do it. And just a little goal that [Real Madrid] conceded the other night. They were 2-0 up and it got back to 2-2.

"There's a ball from the left which goes to our inside-right position - like where Mo Salah runs from outside to inside - and Marcelo is dreaming. I think things like that will be very, very positive for us.

"Not just that. I think we'll have too much energy. I think they're an ageing side and I think we'll have more legs on us than what they will."
