Neville on Glazers: They are scavengers and need booting out of United

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has launched a blistering attack on the club's current owners, the Glazers.

Despite his prominent media role since his retirement, Neville had remained conspicuously quiet on the Americans' controversial ownership at Old Trafford.

The ex-Valencia boss doubled down on his Sunday afternoon comments regarding the Super League, claiming the Glazers are "scavengers" who need "booting out" of United.

Joel Glazer was confirmed as a vice-chairman of the Super League group on Sunday night, saying, "By bringing together the world's greatest clubs and players to play each other throughout the season, the Super League will open a new chapter for European football, ensuring world-class competition and facilities, and increased financial support for the wider football pyramid."

But on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, Neville hit back.

He said, "I feel slightly complicit. I’ve stayed pretty quiet in terms of the Glazers over the years.

"I’ve done that because I’ve thought when the club was taken over as a Plc you knew it could be bought. It was out of the control of players, fans and everybody.

“I believe in a free market, and I’ve always thought what’s the answer to the Glazers, who takes them out? Russia, China, state money for the 2-3 billion it would need?

“I’ve stayed quiet on the basis that it’s still Manchester United, you can still watch the lads play, I can be happy and sad, I can still watch football in this country, they take dividends out, I can live with that slightly, but what I can’t live with is attacking every single football fan in this country.

“They have stepped over the mark. They are scavengers and need booting out of this football club and booting out of this country.

"We have got to come together. It might be too late, there’ll be people at Manchester United, fans 15 years ago who will say it’s too late. It’s never too late, we have got to stop this. It is absolutely critical we do.”

They were thoughts echoed by his Sky colleague, Jamie Carragher.

"What I would say is this is not Liverpool, Man Utd, Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City," the former Liverpool defender said.

"This is John Henry and FSG, Roman Abramovic, Sheikh Mansour, Malcolm Glazer, Stan Kronke, Daniel Levy, these are the people to blame for this.

"What they’re doing is dragging institutions that we’ve seen in this country for more than 100 years, basically through the mud, burning the history of what those clubs are about.

"From my own club’s point of view, the only reason Liverpool are in this or have a chance to be in it, is because they’ve won six European Cups and 20 titles – only one each have come from FSG.

"They used Liverpool’s history, going back to Bill Shankly and before that, to get into the league and line their own pockets.

"The biggest thing for me and the football world, in terms of everybody being against it tonight, Jurgen Klopp has spoken on this in 2019 and made his stance very clear.

"If Liverpool lose their manager on the back of this in the next 12 months or so, those owners will be run out of the club in a week, I can assure you of that."
