Dublin UFC star Cathal Pendred has decided to call time on his mixed martial arts career at the age of just 28.

Since his pro debut in 2009 the Clontarf native, who was born in Boston, has recorded a total of 17 wins, four defeats and one draw.

The welterweight issued a statement on his Twitter account admitting that he has lost his drive to keep competing.

"I now find that my passion is no longer what it was and I feel that it is time for me to move on. I have other interests that I want to pursue. The time is right to close one door and open another.

"My love of MMA remains with me. I intend to maintain my involvement with the sport, but I no longer wish to compete."

Pendred made his UFC debut in front of an adoring home crowd in July 2014 when he produced an incredible comeback to beat Mike King in the Fight of the Night at the (then named) O2 Arena.

After four consecutive victories, Pendred lost to John Howard on a split decision before losing last month, at the venue where his UFC career began, to John Breese.

His reserved a word of thanks for the Irish fans that cheered him on throughout his career.

“I would like to thank all my coaches and team mates for their friendship and support. Thank you to everyone who has followed and supported me on this journey.

"Indeed thanks to everyone that I met through MMA from start to finish. This chapter of my life wouldn't have been the same without you."
