Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has revealed he's held talks with Matt Doherty as the full-back continues to adapt to life in North London.

The Republic of Ireland international has found his place in the Spurs starting XI far from guaranteed in recent weeks.

Doherty arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer, following a £15million (€17m) move from Wolves. The 29-year old started six of Spurs' first eight Premier League games of the season.

However, he was an unused substitute in four of their last nine top flight outings and was deployed as a left wing-back in last month's 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

Mourinho addressed Doherty's status ahead of Wednesday night's FA Cup 5th round trip to Everton.

The Bohemians youth product could be restored to the Spurs side at Goodison, with Serge Aurier struggling through injury.

"I was with SpursTV before I joined you and speaking about Pierre [Emile Hojbjerg]," Mourinho said.

"He is an example of a guy who arrived and immediately looks like a guy who was here his whole life and immediately making an impact.

"Not every player does that. Sometimes it's a little more difficult. But we believe in [Matt], he believes in us, and we spoke about that a few days ago.

"He feels it was a great decision to move, he's very happy to be here and admits he's much better than what he's showing.

"Again, confidence is very important and I believe that he'll only improve. He's a player that we trust."
