Memphis Depay plans to stay at Manchester United and fight for his place under new manager Jose Mourinho.

The former Chelsea boss is on the cusp of being appointed on a 3-year-deal following the sacking of Louis van Gaal.

Depay’s days at Old Trafford appeared to be numbered as he failed to cement a regular place in the side.

He signed for €25,000,000 from PSV Eindhoven but has struggled to impress and to date failed to justify the expensive price tag. He wasn’t even selected for the FA Cup final victory over Crystal Palace.

The winger says that the departure of the Dutchman does not mean he’ll exit Old Trafford:

"Louis Van Gaal's departure does not have consequences for me. I am happy at Manchester United and the board are happy with me.”

“I don't see why Van Gaal's exit would change anything for me," Depay told De Telegraaf.

"I would have made it to United without Van Gaal as well. I say that because I believe in myself and I work hard.

"I don't know whether I had a love-hate relationship with Van Gaal. His exit is just how things go in football and in life. You can only learn from it and become stronger."

Jose Mourinho is the frontrunner for the job and Depay is excited by the prospect of working with him:

"I will ask Wesley Sneijder about Mourinho if he becomes the new manager,” Sneijder previously worked with Mourinho at Inter Milan.

"Sneijder has previously called him the best coach in the world and that is a nice prospect.”

Depay is in the Netherlands squad for their friendly with the Republic of Ireland at the Aviva Stadium on Friday.

Full squad to face Republic of Ireland:

Goalkeepers: Jasper Cillessen (Ajax), Kenneth Vermeer (Feyenoord), Jeroen Zoet (PSV)
