Shamrock Rovers have been dealt a massive blow after it was confirmed that defender Luke Byrne will miss the rest of the SSE Airtricity Premier Division season.

Manager Pat Fenlon told extratime.ie last Tuesday that the full back had injured his cruciate and lateral knee ligament.

The club confirmed by email in a short team update today that the former Bohemians player is out for the rest of the season.

Byrne had only returned to make his first league start of the campaign in the defeat to Cork City at Turners Cross last Monday.

He was replaced after just nine minutes with a knee injury following a challenge with City's Steven Beattie.
