Mary Fitzgerald claimed Ireland's second medal in as many days at the European Para Athletics Championships.

Making her European debut, the Gowran AC member took bronze in the F40 discus in Bydgoszcz.

Fitzgerald opened with a throw of 7.02m, but it was her final throw of 7.35m that clinched a podium position.

Poland's Renata Sliwinska won gold on home soil, breaking her own championship record three times settling on a best of 8.75m

Silver went to Lara Baars of the Netherlands with a throw of 7.85m.

Fitzgerald's bronze follows the gold for Greta Streimikyte in the T13 1500m, with the Clonliffe Harriers athlete setting a new European record on Tuesday.

"I was happy with the distance," the Kilkenny athlete said, "I would have liked to have thrown a little further but really happy all the same.

"Lot’s of stuff to work on but I think that puts me in a good position going to Tokyo, I know what needs to be worked on and now I’m looking forward to the next block of training going on to Tokyo."

Thursday sees Jordan Lee tackle the T47 high jump. Lee claimed bronze in the last European Championships in Berlin in 2018.

Saturday in Bydgoszcz is Ireland's busiest, with Michael McKillop and David Leavy going in the 1500m T38, while Niamh McCarthy competes in the discus F41.
