Jonathan Walters helped to cap off an uplifting weekend for Irish football with the only goal of the game against Georgia which saw Ireland claim all three points an move closer to a a top three spot and possible qualification for Euro 2016.

The only highlight of a dour first half was the home team's one shot on target which came from Seamus Coleman eight minutes before the break.

Wes Hoolahan's cross was headed away to Seamus Coleman whose first touch looked to have let him down but the full back managed to catch the ball on the volley from 20 yards to send ball flying towards the top right hand corner.

Goalkeeper Nukri Revishvilli dived acrobatically to push it away.

Irish skipper Robbie Keane, who had the only other decent chance but couldn't keep the ball down early on, was replaced at half-time by Shane Long.

The hosts' tally of one shot on target was quadrupled by the hour mark.

Coleman was on the attack again in the 57th minute after he played a one two with Wes Hoolahan but could only hit a tame effort with the outside of his right boot in a very congested box and it was easy for the goalkeeper to collect.

That was followed up a couple of minutes later by a Glen Whelan long range effort which was deflected and rolled safely to the goalkeeper while Jeff Hendrick's shot from inside the box also failed to trouble the opposition netminder just moments later.

The Irish attack was full of the intensity and lacking the lethargy that characterised the first-half performance and you could sense the goal was just a matter of time.

It came in the 69th minute and it was Hendrick who created it cutting in off the left channel and showed some beautiful foot work to skip passed a couple of Georgian defenders before sending it across the face of goal.

Walters, under the weight of a challenging defender, somehow managed to get his outside heel to flick the ball past the keeper and into the net.

Ireland had a couple of opportunities to seal the win, particularly an excellent shot from substitute James McClean whose shot was just about saved but one goal was all that was needed in the end to do the job.
