Former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is set to complete a move to Benfica after agreeing on a three-year deal.

The Belgian international is due to have a medical with the Portuguese club on Thursday before joining on a free transfer.

Vertonghen left Spurs at the end of the season following eight years with the Premier League club.

The 33-year-old played 315 games for Spurs, including the 2019 Champions League final defeat against Liverpool.

Vertonghen had also been linked with a move to Serie A with both Roma and Fiorentina interested in him.

Benfica also have their eye on Uruguayan Edinson Cavani, who was out of contract at Paris Saint-Germain at the end of June.

Benfica finished second in the Primeira Liga in Portugal, five points behind winners Porto.

That means they'll step into the Champions League in the third qualifying round.
