The Republic of Ireland lost by a goal to nil to Austria in this World Cup qualifier at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna.

AustriaÂ’s star player, the Bayern Munich Champions League winner David Alaba, pounced for the winner in the 84th minute after slack defensive work from Marc Wilson.

A bad day at the office for the Irish was compounded by the loss of both John OÂ’Shea and Richard Dunne who are suspended for next monthÂ’s qualifier in Cologne against Germany.

OÂ’Shea had a disastrous five minute spell either side of the break firstly booked for a foul and then departing the action in the 49th minute with what could be a serious ankle injury.

Dunne was yellow carded for a deliberate handball in the second half.

Skipper Robbie Keane was also cautioned after the half time whistle for dissent.
