Stephanie Roche has made history after being shortlisted for the 2014 FIFA Puskas award.

The Dubliner is the first woman to make the final three shortlist for the gong, which has never been won by an player from Ireland.

The Irish international, now playing with French club ASPTT Albi, scored the stunning strike for Peamount United against Wexford Youths in October of last year.

Roche said of the strike: "I had my back to goal and had the first touch with my right foot. With the second touch I flicked the ball over the defender's head and then turned and with my third touch volleyed the ball into the net."

Roche faces stiff competition from Dutch striker Robin van Persie and Colombia's James Rodriguez who have both been nominated for goals they scored at the 2014 World Cup finals.

The three shortlisted strikes were whittled down from a list of ten and a vote by the general public will decide the ultimate winner.

The winner will be announced at the Ballon D'Or ceremony in Zurich on the 12th of January.
