Ireland international Chris Farrell is set to undergo surgery to repair an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament sustained yesterday afternoon.

Munster Rugby have confirmed that their centre consulted a specialist after twisting his knee at Ireland's open training session in Dublin and is now ruled out for the rest of the season as he will commence a rehabilitation programme after his operation.

It is a major blow for Farrell who won the man-of-the-match award after an immense performance in the Six Nations victory over Wales and it will also leave Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt short on centre options heading into the last two games against Scotland and England.

The news also comes just a day after Munster lost flanker Chris Cloete with a fractured arm for up to four months.
