Martin O'Neill is not getting carried away with the excellent form shown by James McClean in a green shirt over the last year.
The Republic of Ireland manager was in good form at the Aviva Stadium this afternoon as he helped to launch the 2017 SPAR FAI Primary School 5s Programme.
A question from the floor regarding McClean's suitability for the role of captain produced a hilarious reply from the Irish bossOn a more serious note, O'Neill pointed to the West Brom winger's decision to abstain from using social media as a positive move in helping him progress and to concentrate on his football.
He also voiced his support for McClean's decision to hit out at Derry City boss Kenny Shiels, who recently stated that “international football is not what it used to be” and that there was “no pride in it any more because, once you have had a pint of Guinness, you could play for Ireland!”
McClean was angered by the Derry boss' "silly and stupid comments" and went on to say, "I do everything in my power to give 100 per cent when wearing it, so how dare Kenny Shiels make such ridiculous comments when he knows very little about playing international football.”
