It’s a big day for Cabinteely F.C. The Dublin club play their first game in the SSE Airtricity League First Division.

Wexford Youths are the visitors to their ground, Stradbrook. The southside outfit will play in the home of Blackrock rugby club, after they took the vacant spot in the First Division vacated by the now defunct Shamrock Rovers B Team.

After the Hoops pulled the plug, the administrators were left with the dilemma of leveling the playing field, desperate to avoid the introduction of a seven team league.

Cabinteely F.C. have stepped up to the plate but their introduction to the league has not been warmly received by all stakeholders.

The fear of failure is prevalent before a ball has even been kicked, the arrival of a new club on the scene is nothing new to the League of Ireland.

Nor is the disbanding of a club, with Dublin City and Sporting Fingal trying and failing to make a home in the top flight of the domestic game.

The director of the League of Ireland Fran Gavin believes the latest arrival are a great addition to the competition and has defended the club's inclusion.

Gavin has been speaking to 98FM Sport’s Darren Cleary
