Gary Neville has been appointed as the new head coach of La Liga side Valencia.

The former Manchester United captain is a surprise appointment to the role until the end of the season.

It's his first foray into management, having been a coach with England under Roy Hodgson and a pundit with Sky Sports since his retirement in 2011.

He joins his brother Phil, who has been a coach with the club since the summer.

Valencia are owned by Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim, who also part-owns Salford City along with the Neville brothers, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.

40-year-old Neville has spoken of his delight at his new post.

"I am excited and I am proud to have received this huge opportunity with Valencia Football Club.

“It is a huge club, of immense prestige and I remember well from my time as a player, the passion and loyalty of their fans"

"I'm looking forward to working with them, I know it's a group of very talented players. I am very excited about the challenge that lies ahead together"

Neville will take charge from next Sunday, with his first game against Lyon in the Champions League on Wednesday 9th December.

His fellow pundit at Sky Sports Jamie Carragher hasn't taken the news all that well:
