The FAI have tonight released an update on their investigation into Athlone Town.

Irish football's governing body revealed last night that they had launched an investigation into the club regarding "potential breaches of FAI rules".

The FAI have now contacted all parties at the club to arrange interviews which will be held next week while they have also contacted UEFA seeking further information on the "irregular betting patterns" included in the report.

They also reveal that UEFA have told them that most of the gambling in question took place on Asian markets.

The statement in full reads;

"The Football Association of Ireland would like to provide an update into the investigation on Athlone Town AFC.

"On May 3, the FAI confirmed that it had launched an investigation into Athlone Town AFC upon the receipt of a detailed report from UEFA highlighting irregular betting patterns in the SSE Airtricity League First Division game against Longford Town on Saturday, April 29.

" - The FAI has written individually to players, coaches and officials at the club outlining arrangements for interview on Monday, May 8 and Tuesday, May 9

" - Further contact has been made with UEFA to establish more detail on the irregular betting patterns contained in its report to the FAI

" - UEFA has confirmed that the biggest movements in betting took place on Asian markets."

The Midlands club followed last night's FAI statement with one of their own to say they were "absolutely shocked" by the contents of the UEFA report in relation to their recent game against Longford Town.

They added; "The club absolutely abhors match fixing and would never knowingly get involved in such unacceptable activity.

"Should any of the allegations be upheld the club will take action against any wrongdoers."
