The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) have confirmed that the latest round of League of Ireland COVID-19 tests have returned negative results.

The testing was done on Monday, 1 June and is the second round of screening to be carried out on players and staff at the four SSE Airtricity League clubs.

The first round of testing which happened just over a week ago also saw no positive results returned.

FAI Medical Director Dr Alan Byrne received the results today from the tests carried out on Monday at Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers, Derry City and Bohemians.

All of those tested have been informed of their negative result.

All four clubs will undergo further testing on Monday, 8 June when they return to collective training, as part of the pilot programme to ensure a safer return for football at all levels under the jurisdiction of the FAI.

The news of the results comes less than 24 hours after Bohemians admitted to making an "error" by allowing two groups of three players train together.

Dr Byrne had had advised that the four European clubs - including Bohemians - could return to training on 8 June following a two-week testing period.

The Dublin club insisted that they did not breach Covid-19 restrictions as they followed the government and not the FAI advice.

In response to the incident, an FAI spokesman said: "The cessation order on all football activities under the jurisdiction of the FAI remains in place until July 20th – with the exception of the four SSE Airtricity League clubs qualified for European competition – Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers, Derry City and Bohemians - and Women’s Champions League representatives Peamount United.

"Players from Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers, Derry City and Bohemians are currently engaged in a pilot testing programme for COVID-19 as we work towards a safer return to football for all players, match officials, staff and volunteers.

"It is expected that those four SSE Airtricity League clubs will be permitted to return to organised training next Monday, June 8th, as part of Phase Two of the Government’s Roadmap for Reopening Society and Business.

"The FAI remains committed to complying with all Governmental guidelines regarding return to work and return to sport protocols."
