Dundalk looking into streaming friendly matches v Bohemians and Derry

Premier Division champions Dundalk have announced plans to host two friendly matches which the club may also stream live.

As part of their preparations for the resumption of the SSE Airtricity League season, the Louth club have arranged to play friendlies against Derry City and Bohemians at Oriel Park over the next fortnight.

The club confirmed in a statement that the matches will be played at an empty ground in accordance with Covid-19 restrictions.

"These fixtures, and any other friendlies, will be played behind closed doors and under strict government, public health and FAI guidelines. As a result, no media will be permitted to attend," reads the statement.

"Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the club’s overriding priority has been the health and wellbeing of our players, coaches, staff and the local community."

The club have asked supporters to respect the guidelines while also revealing that they are looking into broadcasting the games online.

"After five months without football, we fully understand that people are craving live action again but strict protocols have been put in place and we kindly ask everyone to adhere to them," the statement adds.

"We have received the FAI’s Safer Return to Football protocols and have started working towards the implementation of these guidelines, which includes press accreditation, for the league restart on July 31st.

"We are currently exploring the possibility of streaming the upcoming friendlies."

Dundalk, Bohemians and Derry City, along with Shamrock Rovers were the first clubs to resume collective training last month as part of the FAI's Safer Return to Football programme.

As part of that plan, all four clubs underwent six rounds of Covid-19 testing and it produced a clean bill of health with no positive results returned.

The rest of the Premier Division and First Division clubs have since returned to training and it was confirmed last week that the season would resume on 31 July.

A truncated season will be played under the existing format which allows for a promotion and relegation play-off.

All match results from the 2020 season played before the shutdown will be counted and each team will now play just 18 games.
