Club owner Mike Ashley was thought to be in favour of appointing his long-serving captain as manager, the defender has been a fan favourite at the club and has made over 200 appearances since joining from Deportivo La Coruna in 2008.
Those reports appear to be untrue. Alan Pardew is on the verge of a move to Crystal Palace. Newcastle confirmed on Monday night that compensation had been agreed and Pardew began talks with his former club.
He looks likely to replace Neil Warnock, the deal could be done before the end of the week. Newcastle assistant manager John Carver will be in charge for the time being, he will take today's training session.
