Brian O'Driscoll senses Grand Slam is stepping stone to "something big in Japan next year"

In stark contrast to the sense of nervousness that prevailed beforehand, cool heads won out at Twickenham on Saturday as Ireland got their hands on just the nation's third ever Six Nations Grand Slam.

Yet the victory for Ireland still has a sense of a staging post to something more rather than the peak of what this team can achieve.

Former Ireland captain Brian O'Driscoll, who had been the last Ireland captain to lift the Six Nations trophy for a Irish Grand Slam winning team, joined Joe to give us his take on Saturday and what the future is likely to hold for Joe Schmidt's side.

"You do get the sense that this is ultimately a stepping stone to something great, to something big in Japan next year and I heard Rob Kearney make reference to that," said Brian in reference to Ireland finally making a mark in the latter stage of a Rugby World Cup.

"I think there is a confidence breathing through this team that, 'Do you know what? If we stay the course and do what we have been doing, that we have a great chance.'"

Ireland's control of proceedings for vast portions of the tournament and their tactical ingenuity which was especially evident against England also caught Brian's eye.

"It's rare enough that you see the modifications like you're seeing with this Ireland team. I think there's ingenuity like you would associate with other great teams like the All Blacks," he said.

"I think we are at the cutting edge and Joe Schmidt is at the cutting edge of plays and in years to come, we're going to see other coaches copying what he is doing because his thought given to the gameplan and the rationale behind it, I think differentiates him from any other coach in the world."
