Mario Balotelli was both the hero and the villain for Liverpool last night.

He scored a late penalty to give the Reds a 1-nil win over Besiktas in the Europa League.

But there was some controversy, after the Italian argued with captain Jordan Henderson over who should take the penalty.

Reds captain Steven Gerrard, who was injured on the night, accused Balotelli of showing "disrespect"

He insisted that Henderson was down to take spot-kicks and that "rules are rules".

Afterwards, boss Brendan Rodgers wasn't willing to discuss his skipper's comments:

Balotelli played down the incident via instagram afterwards:

Thank you hendo for let me take the penalty.. Stop drama now. We won that's what it count. We are a team and expecially we are Liverpool. Come on guys. 👊

Milan again took the lead just before the half time break after a mistake from keeper Craig Gordon.

But John Guidetti levelled the game with a stunning strike in injury time at the end of the game.

Celtic boss Ronny Deila was delighted with how his squad matched the Italians:

Deila is also confident they can go to the San Siro next week and get a result:

There are more injury concerns over James McCarthy.

He hobbled off last night, as Everton came from behind to thrash Young Boys of Bern 4-1 away.

The Irish midfielder has struggled with hamstring problems for months and missed Ireland's last 3 Euro 2016 qualifiers as a result.

Everton have one foot in the last 16 of the Europa League after that stunning away win.

Romelu Lukaku hit a hatrick there, while Seamus Coleman was also on the mark.

Boss Roberto Martinez was delighted with the win:

Elsewhere last night, Spurs were held to a 1-all draw at home to Fiorentina.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino felt his side deserved more from the game:
