Andy Murray says he's "gutted" to have to miss next month's Australian Open tennis.

The former world tennis number one missed his chartered flight to Melbourne after recently testing positive for coronavirus.

He's recently exited self isolation but time ran out in a bid to make it to Australia in time for the first Grand Slam of the season, which gets underway on February the 8th.

Murray says his team have been desperately trying to find a solution to allow him to play but that they couldn't make it work.

"Gutted to share that I won't be flying out to Australia to compete at the Australian Open," the Scot has announced.

"We've been in constant dialogue with Tennis Australia to try and find a solution which would allow some form of workable quarantine, but we couldn't make it work.

"I want to thank everyone there for their efforts, I'm devastated not to be playing out in Australia. It's a country and tournament that I love."
