'A great honour' | ROI international Quinn appointed Birmingham captain

Republic of Ireland defender Louise Quinn has been appointed captain of Birmingham City Women, having joined the club last month.

The 31-year-old centre back, who has won 86 caps for Ireland, only joined Birmingham last month, having spent last season at Fiorentina.

The former Arsenal defender will add plenty of experience to a Birmingham side that finished just above the relegation zone in last season's Women's Super League.

Speaking to the club's Twitter page, Quinn says it's a huge honor to be given the role so soon after signing.

"It's a great honour to captain Blues and a real surprise but it's something that I'm really proud of.

"It's all about the team. We have a lot of leaders in there as well, and it'll be an honour wearing the armband, but we have a lot of players that can step up and do that role.

"I like to speak on the pitch, I like to help players out, I like to ask and demand of my teammates around me. I'm going to help them as much as I can and I want everyone to be able to do that for each other. I don't think it'll change my role too much.

"I've had a little bit of responsibility before in other teams, but this is a different experience, and to do it in the WSL is massive."

Birmingham begin their WSL campaign away to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday September 4th.
