Liam Scales will pen a four-year contract with Scottish Premiership club Celtic after the Bhoys agreed his transfer from Shamrock Rovers.

The 23-year-old defender spent two seasons at Tallaght Stadium, having joined the Hoops from UCD.

Scales has played at centre-half and left wing-back for Rovers, and has been capped five times by the Republic of Ireland Under-21s.

The fee is believed to be in the region of €600,0000.

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou says Scales' versatility appeals.

“Liam is a young player who has impressed us and is someone who we think has the potential to have a big future at Celtic. He is an athletic defender who has the ability to play in a number of positions.

“As I have said before, everyone at the club has been working hard to add depth and quality to our squad and in signing Liam I think again we have made good progress. We all look forward to welcoming Liam to Celtic and to start working with him."

Scales didn't make the senior Republic of Ireland squad for the World Cup qualifiers, but is on standby.

His Celtic debut may come sooner rather than later, as Greg Taylor has picked up an injury.

Rovers, for their part, have thanked Scales for his contribution.
