A public consultation on plans to cut speeds to 30km/h in Dublin city begins today.

The proposed bye-laws would see the lower limit introduced as the default speed on most roads throughout the city.

The temporary measure is part of the local authority's Covid-19 mobility plan to protect the increasing numbers of cyclists and walkers.

The council had been altering speeds in all residential areas to 30km/h in recent months.

At present all roads in the Dublin City Council area have a default speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour, where the posted speed limit varies from this the roads are specifically listed in the Speed Bye Laws.

It is now proposed to change the default speed limit from 50 kilometres per hour to 30 kilometres per hour, unless otherwise stated.

A number of arterial routes including Clontarf Road and Harold's Cross Road would fall under the new lower limits.

The consultation will last for six weeks, ending on August 13th. You can see more here.
