Irish Water’s started an upgrade of part of the Ringsend wastewater treatment plant.

It's currently running at over capacity due to Dublin’s ever growing population.

Irish Water are carrying out these works to improve the pumping station into one of the treatment tanks so that it works better at cleaning up waste water before it’s pumped into the Dublin Bay.

The work will be carried out over a number of days between now and the 21st – but it all depends on the weather staying dry.

It comes ahead of plans by the utility to apply for planning permission next year to extend the plant.

But it’s not good news for swimmers – there are bans in place on Dollymount Strand, Half Moon, Sandymount and Merrion Strand for the next 2 weeks.

That's because Irish Water will be releasing partially treated water into the bay to allow engineers carry out the works.
