After six years of lying idle there are finally signs of life at a well known former gym complex in Dublin 15.

Total Fitness closed down at the peak of the recession in 2011 with the company blaming high rents.

The British chain also had branches at Clare Hall and Lamb Doyles near Sandyford.

The closure was controversial at the time, with a number of people losing their jobs and members losing out on subscriptions.

Tens of thousands of euro worth of gym equipment was left behind in the West Dublin branch where it has remained undisturbed all this time.

The building suddenly stopped trading in March 2011. Here's how it looks inside in 2017.

Now the building straddling Castleknock and Blanchardstown has been bought out by new owners and is to be revamped as a 'fitness, food and leisure' destination.

Junction 6 Castleknock is due to open this summer under new management. Ger Conroy, who already runs a studio in Muldhuddart, will oversee the new gym.

However the complex is also set to feature a kids trampoline/soft-play area, coffee shop, beauty and hair salon and creche for gym-goers.

Junction 6 marketing manager Paula O'Sullivan has told 98FM it will be somewhere a family can come to.

"You'll have your gym operators and fitness section; so your yoga and pilates teachers... You'll have your healthy options with a smoothie bar and an area where, after the gym, you can grab a protein shake.

If you just want to do that, you can. But you'll also (be able to) come down and grab a coffee while you watch the kids play in the activity centre... As the development grows it will be a point where people from the local community can come and meet their friends."

Spin bikes and thousands of euros of other valuable equipment remained inside

There will also be studios available for dance teachers in the local area, meaning classes like ballet could potentially take place in the building too.

Total Fitness had an extensive aquatic area with hydrotherapy pool and sauna but this will not feature the new incarnation.

The 'fitness village' is set to open in mid to late summer.
