An increase in the State pension and other welfare payments will likely be included in the upcoming budget.

Ministers are meeting at the moment to approve the Summer Economic Statement outlining more than two billion euro in additional spending.

They're also likely to bring forward the date of the budget to the end of September.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said they're trying to strike a balance between increasing spending while not chasing inflation

"We do have to think about 2023 and beyond and make sure we have sustainability in our public finances.

"We also want to see what we can do for the remainder of 2022 because we are conscious that people are under a lot of pressure right now."

Most of the measures will focus on the cost of living crisis with a new electricity credit, increased social welfare payments and measures to reduce childcare costs all expected.
