Remember when bank guarantee was introduced, Kings of Leon Sex on Fire was in the charts and Barack Obama was elected US president?

That's the last time unemployment was as low as it is today.

The number of those out of work has fallen below 9 per cent for the first time since December 2008.

The new figures from the Central Statistics Office also show the rate of youth unemployment has fallen below 20 per cent for the first time since the economic crash.

The unemployment rate was at 8.9 percent in October, the lowest in almost 7 years.

Youth unemployment is below 20 percent after hitting highs of 33 per cent in 2012.

Jobs Minister Richard Bruton admits that the youth figures are tempered by the fact that many young people have emigrated but says he hopes they can be attracted back.

The growth is also being seen outside Dublin with the South-East, Midlands and border regions all seeing jobs growth of 12 to 14 per cent.

Tanaiste Joan Burton has described it as a milestone day and says the trend needs to continue.
