A truck driver has appeared in court charged in connection with the seizure of one million euro worth of cocaine at Dublin port over the weekend.

Maurice McCreesh of Main Street, Fork Hill in Newry, Co. Down will be released on bail if he hands €10,000 into court.

15 kilos of cocaine worth just over one million euro were found inside a haulage truck when Gardai searched the vehicle on Saturday morning.

Detective Garda Tim Casey from the Garda's drugs and organised crime bureau said it arrived on a ferry from the UK.

He said Maurice McCreesh, a truck driver from Northern Ireland, was the only person in the truck and there was no attempt to conceal the drugs.

Gardai objected to bail because of seriousness of the charge, but Judge Anthony Halpin agreed to release him under strict conditions.

They include a 10,000 cash lodgement and the surrender of his passport. He’ll also have to sign on daily at his local Garda Station and abide by a curfew.

The 37-year-old father of three was remanded in custody with consent to bail and is due back in court later this week.
