The head of Tourism Ireland says he doesn't believe the latest spate of gangland violence will put people off visiting Dublin.

Armed Gardai have been pictured patrolling the streets, amid fears of more revenge attacks.

The shootings of David Byrne last Friday and Eddie Hutch this Monday have been headline news here in Dublin - but they’ve also made news reports on television and radio around the world.

There’s now a concern that these gangland hits and the presence of armed Gardai on the streets may put people off coming to Dublin on holidays.

Niall Gibbons, Chief Executive of Tourism Ireland, told 98FM News that "I've been in Germany and the United States over the past week, and it's not being discussed as widely as we might think. It's still awful to see it".

"Countries like North Africa since the Arab Spring for example have had their industries devastated, we've seen short-term impacts to what's happened in Paris and Brussels - but we're seen as a very green, clean, safe destination", he added.

Tourism chiefs say they’re expecting another record year for visitor numbers with the season kicking off on the St. Patrick’s Day weekend in March.

The Tourism Minister, Paschal Donohoe, says he expects Dublin to be thriving once again for the national holiday despite the recent bad publicity "the feedback from tourists when they leave is that they have found it a safe and secure place to spend their holiday".

While the tourism industry doesn't fear the attacks will put visitors off, the City-Wide Drug Crisis Campaign says locals are afraid to go out at night in fear they could get caught up in something.

People in the north inner city are said to be nervous of what they might witness following two high profile gangland murders.

Joan Byrne, Co-ordinator of City-Wide Drug Crisis Campaign, said Eddie Hutch Senior’s murder has had a serious impact on the community "Very fearful, very frightful - shocked probably."

"I think something new happened the other day. I think it happening in such a blatant way, with total disrespect for local people and Gardai. I think people are stunned that this has happened right in their midst".
