Up to 5 thousand US Visas could be made available to Irish citizens.

It's part of a new bill which was presented to Congress recently.

The bill put before the House of Representatives proposes that Ireland is added to the E3 programme.

As things stand, only Australian citizens can apply for the two year visa, which would allow individuals and their spouses to live and work in the US.

However, only half of the 10 thousand 500 allocation is taken up each year, which has led to the possibility of widening its availability.

According to the Irish Times, the government's special envoy to the US John Deasy has held discussions with the office of the House speaker Paul Ryan on the matter.

The bill would need the support of the House and the Senate before it can be signed into law.
