Around 1.2 million people are to receive a Christmas bonus in their social welfare payments next week.
The 75% bonus will be paid under regulations issued by the government this afternoon.
The payment was scrapped in 2009 - but will now return next week at a cost of 200 million euro.
Tánaiste Joan Burton says there's been a huge demand for the payment to be restored.
