Today marks 25 years since the very first text was sent.
The short message simply read 'Merry Christmas' and was typed on a computer, because mobiles could only receive messages at the time.
Test engineer at Vodafone, Neil Papworth, was the man behind it in 1992.
"I know that the first systems we put in would do something like two messages per second whereas nowadays operators are probably doing tens of thousands of messages a second", says Neil.
"The first message was 'Merry Christmas', spelt with the full words, not Xmas, it was Christmas", he explains.
"It was sent to Richard Jarvis who was director for Vodafone at the time and he was at the Vodafone Christmas party".
