A teenager has been jailed for two years for a racist attack that led to an Iraqi DIT student losing his sight in one eye.

Aaron Shattock of Kingswood Heights, Tallaght pretended to be interested in chatting with him while he awaited the arrival of a gang.

19-year-old DIT Student Yasser Saud was with his cousin in a park in Tallaght when they were set upon by a gang of up to 12 men.

Just moments beforehand, the court heard Aaron Shattock and another man began chatting to them and feigned normality while they awaited the arrival of the others.

The gang racially abused the Iraqi cousins and began kicking and punching them.

During the attack, Shattock threw a stick at Yasser causing him to lose his sight in his right eye.

Shattock, who was 17 at the time, has no previous convictions but Judge Martin Nolan said had to mark the seriousness of the crime with a custodial sentence before jailing him for 2 years.
