The Department of Agriculture has confirmed that it is investigating a suspected case of BSE in Co Louth.
BSE is more commonly know as the mad cow disease.
The Department said that the five-year-old cow in question did not enter the food chain.
If confirmed it would be the first case of Mad Cow Disease in Ireland since 2013.
Tests are being carried out on the dairy farm and the results are due to be back next week.
The Health Minister, Leo Varadkar, stressed that there is no threat to human health.
