There's a surge in the number of people looking for court protection from violent partners.

While there's a drop in number of barring orders being granted, the number of safety notices is on the rise.

New figures from the court services domestic violence applications over a 7 year period to 2014 have been released.

They show that the number of orders barring someone from the familiy home are down by 38 percent over that time.

However the number of safety orders, which are to stop violence or threatening behaviour are up by 55 percent.

A spokesperson for Women's Aid said the drop in barring orders is unsurprising as many woman report how difficult they are to get.

She added that the current housing crisis is also proving problematic as some women do not want to see their partners homeless despite the abuse.
