Student Accommodation Crisis Highlighted

There are 40 percent fewer properties available to rent than this time last year - causing difficulties for students going to college.

The latest DAFT-dot-ie Rental Report highlights a shortage of homes for rent - and a lack of affordable properties.

Nationwide, rents have gone up by 90 euro a month year-on-year, and costs in the capital are skyrocketing.

Economist with Trinity College Ronan Lyons, who compiled the DAFT report, says rents have gone up by over 10 percent nationally in the last 12 months:

Meanwhile the Union of Students in Ireland will launch its accommodation and finance guide for college goers this morning.

Homeowners are being asked to rent out their rooms to students.

With just a few weeks to go to the start of the college year, digs could be the answer to the accommodation crisis.
