St Patrick's Institution closes its doors today.
The juvenile detention centre has been the subject of major criticism for human and children's rights over the years.
There were concerns over conditions at the facility on the grounds of Mountjoy prison, including drug taking, inadequate education, bullying and violence.
In 2011 it was deamed to be the most violent jail in Ireland and calls for the facility to close were made as far back as 1985.
It is closing today - 32 years later.
All 17 year olds are now committed by the court to Oberstown Children Detention Campus.
The Tanaiste and Minister for Justice Francis Fitzgerald is welcoming the move and said St. Patrick's is now consigned to the history books.
