Kidnappings are up according to the latest crime figures.

But the acting Garda Commissioner is welcoming the stats which show that overall, crime is down.

The Central Statistics Office has revealed there was an increase in kidnappings of just under 18 percent last year.

Out of 119 related offences, 42 were in Dublin.

There was also a slight rise in homicide cases - they went up by just over a percent.

But overall crime rates were down across all other categories.

Fraud and public order offences saw the biggest drops of 14 and 17 percent respectively.

The acting Garda Commissioner - Noirín O'Sullivan - has welcomed the decreases, saying they reflect the hard work and commitment of dedicated officers across the country.
