The home of some of Dublin's most loved pubs, hair salons and cafés has formally been named a great street.

South William Street took the title of ‘Great Street’ at the 2019 Urbanism Awards in London.

It was up against Argyle Street in Glasgow and Kirkgate in Leeds, and took the top prize for consistently reinventing itself.

In the lead assessor's report, Alistair Barr said "each reinvention has added layers of richness and delight to the street’s special place in Dublin".

"The small grain of development allows start-up businesses to flourish and the supportive nature of the business community has encouraged growth", he said.

South William Street was proposed by the Dublin City Architects office, and the application was supported by DublinTown.

Assessors were given guided tours of the street and key buildings during a visit in September.

They visited a wide range of businesses on the street such as the Powerscourt Centre, the Irish Georgian Society and Grogan’s Pub.
