22 social housing tenants owe more than €20,000 each in rent arrears to South Dublin County Council.

The local authority is taking court action against those who have so far failed to pay.

The council is owed over €9 million in rent arrears, with more than half of its tenants in the red.

Almost 1,000 tenants are now facing legal action and their homes may be repossessed.

Fine Gael councillor David McManus says it's unfair on those who are paying.

"South Dublin County Council charge some of the lowest council rents nationwide and yet we have the highest arrears.

"I can't get my head around that and I'm asking council management because there has to be some logical explanation.

"In other words, there are councils that charge a higher rate than 10 percent and they have a much better collection rate."
