A man accused of taking part in a violent clash between traveller families at the Smithfield horse fair in 2011 has been sent forward for trial.

Earlier this month, Simon Quilligan, of no fixed abode, was brought back from the UK to face serious assault charges.

The world renowned horse fair in the centre of Dublin city attracted headlines for all the wrong reasons on March 6th 2011.

Large crowds fled in a panic when the sound of gunfire caused horses to rear up and bolt.

As bystanders ran to safety, groups from various traveller families attacked each other with sticks, tyre irons and other weapons.

Three men were hospitalised during the violent clashes which resulted in the introduction of new laws to regulate the Smithfield horse fair.

Simon Quilligan is accused of nearly severing one man's arm with a slash hook and causing serious head injuries to another.

The 31-year-old father of two was extradited from the UK earlier this month and was refused bail after being brought home.

He appeared in court this morning where he was handed a book of evidence and sent forward for trial to the next sittings of Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
