Gardai have swept a church in the Liberties for explosives ahead of the funeral of David Byrne.
A massive security operation, personally overseen by the Garda Commissioner, has been underway for the past few days ahead of the Crumlin man's funeral at 12.30pm today.
The dad of two was gunned down on the 5th of February at a boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel. Three days later, Eddie Hutch Senior - brother of The Monk - was murdered at his home in an apparent revenge attack.
David Byrne’s funeral takes place at St Nicholas of Myra Church on Francis Street with burial afterwards at Mount Jerome Cemetery in Harold's Cross. The security sweep was carried out at the church amid fears devices had been placed there, either to explode or to disrupt the funeral proceedings.
Roads are closed around the Byrne family home on Raleigh Square in Crumlin and garda checkpoints are in place this morning. A similar security operation expected for the funeral of Eddie Hutch Snr. which will take place later this week.
