A second board member of Fáilte Ireland has resigned after travelling abroad.

Breege O’Donoghue - who is also an executive at Primark / Penneys - has stepped down after travelling to Spain during the summer.

Spain is not on the travel green list.

It comes following the resignation of the tourism organisation's former chairman Michael Cawley last month.

Tourism Minister Catherine Martin confirmed she had accepted Ms O'Donoghue's resignation, saying she was "disappointed" to learn a second member of the board travelled abroad.

The minister said: "I rang Ms O’Donoghue this evening and she has offered her resignation which I have accepted.

"I wish to thank Ms O’Donoghue for her service as a member of the Board of Fáilte Ireland and her important contribution to the work of promoting tourism in Ireland during this time.

"I have accepted her resignation as I believe it would not be tenable for her to continue in the role, given all of the circumstances."

Minister Martin said she'll now seek a meeting with members of the Fáilte Ireland board to 'make clear' members are expected to show leadership during the crisis.
