Companions of pregnant women will have to show their Covid-19 cert to get into Dublin's Rotunda Hospital.

The change will kick in on December 1st and will apply to those attending appointments, labour and birth and on inpatient wards.

In a statement, Ireland's busiest maternity hospital says the National Public Health Emergency Team has recommended that the ‘COVID Pass/Certificate’ be adopted as a requirement for visitation to healthcare settings.

"With this in mind, nominated companions visiting the Hospital will be requested to provide their COVID pass as part of our safety screening process at our front entrance, from 1st December 2021."

It comes as 28 pregnant women have been admitted to intensive care with Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.

Another 12 needed ICU care within six weeks of giving birth. The HSE says there were very low vaccination rates in this group of women.

Of the 35 admitted to ICU since January, 34 hadn't had any Covid vaccine, and one woman only had her first dose.
