The number of people who've reported finding child abuse images online has doubled.

Of 5000 complaints raised last year, 335 cases were confirmed to be illegal content.

The Internet Service Providers Association of Ireland says the figures show that the criminal underbelly of the internet is getting bigger and bigger.

Last year, the online watchdog Hotline.ie received its most ever complaints about the so-called ‘Dark Net’ which allows users remain anonymous.

Pedophiles have been caught using it as a place for child sexual abuse and it has also become an online marketplace for drug dealers.

Paul Durrant of the Internet Service Providers Association of Ireland said this year the group has "had the highest number of dark net reports ever."

"You could view it as actually a good thing, because maybe people are more willing to report, which is what we want, so we can pass the information onto the authorities, delete the content and prosecute".
