It looks like a LUAS or rail link will be given the green light for the Airport and Swords.

Transport Minister Paschal Donoghue is finalising the details of the project which it’s hoped will ease congestion from the Northside.

It’s been in the pipeline for some time, a new transport link from the city to swords and the airport, with four options on the the table. A decision was due at the beginning of the summer but it’s been pushed back.

However, it looks like rail line like the LUAS or DART will to be the preferred option by Transport Minister Paschal Donoghue.

Dublin Chamber of Commerce says a rail link for the Northside is something it's been campaigning for for a long time. Its spokesperson Graeme McQueen said "we can't have people coming in their cars, we don't have the road space, congestion is a big issue in the city."

"We need a public transport facility that's going to ease the pressure. This link to Dublin Airport is the perfect solution", he added.

As the Government looks set to green light a rail line to the airport, it's expected to ditch plans for a DART Underground.

Ian Lumley from heritage group An Taisce believes it’s a vital link for the whole of Dublin saying "It would be the most disastrous short-term economics if DART Underground were to be abandoned after going through the planning system."

The Department of Transport has told 98FM News that the Minister will make an announcement on both in the coming weeks.
